Plant Care Tips for Palms and Cyads

PLANTING - Dig the hole twice as wide and one and a half times as deep as your root ball.  Palms should be planted slightly above the ground level, so water can drain away from the plant.  most palms do not like “wet feet”.  Palms like slightly acid soil.  Using organic compost (i.e. mushroom compost, cow manure, leaf mulch, soil conditioner, bark compost) will make the soil acidic.  Also, we sell a product called “DIEHARD PALM TRANSPLANT” that seems to help the palm through the shock of transplanting.

FERTILILZING - It is recommended that a fertilizer specifically for palms be used as they contain minor nutrients palms require.  In Baldwin County, you should not fertilize palms between SEPTEMBER 15TH and FEBRUARY 15TH.  Otherwise, follow the package instructions.

Insects & Diseases

INSECTS - Insects that might “infest” your palms include scale, spider mites, palm skeletonizers and palmetto weevils. For preventative or treatment, use year round oil spray (paraffinic oil), or palm tree fertilizer with systemic insecticide will usually take care of any insect problems.

DISEASES - Most diseases associated with palms are due to overwatering and/or planting the palm too deep.  also, overhead watering is not good for palms.  Leaf spot is a common disease that can be treated with a copper based fungicide.  Phytophthora bud rot is another disease that affects palms.  This is usually caused by damage to the crown of the palm by overwatering and sometimes freezing.
